I'm somewhat intrigued by the world hater majik/desscaras thing I must see what else you have in your brain

man, babyfish, that's not a weekday question, i have work to do but i'm rotating them in my mind like barbies in a microwave.

anyways! let's talk about why i find the (potential) relationship between Desscaras and the World Hater Majik (one of) the most interesting in the series.

First a disclaimer: We actually still know so. very. little. about WHM and how they work and what they want. It's literally sad how little we know! So a lot of what I talk about will be extrapolation and conjunction. But that's the fun of it, I feel!

So, what do we know?

We know that the World Hater Majik is accepting of their fate:

This guy's fine with the lot assigned to them. If they're not fine, they're not about to show it to anyone, they're not gonna fight it, it's "the sole reason [they] exist."

Which is literally the complete opposite of Desscaras's approach to fate.

We meet Desscaras fighting to acquire Uroro, because at the time that was what was the prophesied requirement to reach where the WHM is:

I can't find the post now, but the Japanese for the prophecy specifies that it'll be a magic man who acquires Uroro and that finesse got lost in translation, but it is a factor to my interpretation: Dess knew from the start that it can't be her in the prophecy and yet! She went for it. Because Desscaras fights fate.

This continues with the way she challenges WHM when they come face to face:

And then with the way she rejects the very premise of the prophecy by tying her life to Ichi's, because as she says herself, it doesn't matter what the prophecy says, throwing all of that on the shoulders of a child is just not right:

So right from the start you have two characters that operate from opposite positions, one passive, the other proactive. Just this on its own this makes their interactions extremely compelling to me. (There's stuff to be said about the ways Ichi and his attitude to it all compliments it all as well but. lol. this is already long.)

Of course, there's also the emotional aspect going on here. For the WHM emotions are a thing that needs to be pulled out of them like teeth, something that they're very aware and careful about; any show of emotion being suppressed and dismissed.

Yet, Descarras terrifies them:

Dess's side of things is equally interesting to me: She's usually so expressive and yet, while going against the WHM she's almost like a (mocking) doll:

She's locked in, her feelings neatly packed away because there's work to be done. That is, until this point:

This is the most expressive Desscaras acts in her entire confrontation with the WHM, and it's to seek understanding.

That is the crux of it for me: to Desscaras this is an enemy that has done her a great wrong. A wrong they've proceeded to express zero remorse over, going on to completely dismiss her feelings about it even. An enemy who is threatening her new family just as they've destroyed the old one. By all accounts, someone Desscaras has every right to strive to destroy, to try and get in at least a parting shot, she's shown she can get under their skin after all. Instead, she asks "What are you trying to do?!"

Here's the thing: we know that majik trials are not always shows of strength. We've seen many things so far: violence but also makeovers, endurance challenges, and I'm sure we'll see many more to come.

Desscaras is the greatest witch with the most majiks. For that you need brute force, yes, but you also need an unusual amount of empathy and willingness to meet the other where they are. I can't imagine Golconda had a trial where you needed to beat it up.

When Togeice called Desscaras kind, this wasn't just her saying it, we can infer from her status that this is just how Dess approaches life: with consideration and empathy for the other.

Interestingly, the WHM responds to this. They, big, broody nihilist they are, take the time to look back and detail their plans. Hell, they take it further, explaining their reasoning and promising they'll be back soon.

We've got two characters on opposing sides, with clashing worldviews and a whole mess of volatile emotions between them. Yet, the one instance a bridge is attempted, it's responded to in kind.

Finally, there's the aesthetic aspect of it: I've gone on about the WHM being the sacrificial lamb, the princess chained to a rock, and in general a fundamentally passive, resigned figure. (Seriously, go look at how they're posed in almost every panel they're in, they're in an action pose maybe twice).

Desscaras, in contrast, is always in motion, but on a more aesthetic note, Desscaras is a knight. She has a sword for a magic wand, when she meets royalty, she does a little bow with her hand to her heart, her volume cover has her in a duelist's position, etc. you get my point.

A princess chained to their fate, and a knight fighting it, on opposing sides of a conflict, yet both have demonstrated willingness to meet across the abyss. Kind of has a romantic air to it, don't you think?

so, yeah, there you have it! there's probably other stuff as well but fundamentally it comes down to the fact that i want to put them in a box together, seal it, and then punt it down a flight of stairs, just to see what happens.

I'm probably not the best person to make this observation bc I am White TM and not especially well-versed in rap music's history, but what is this phenomenon going on in my notes about Kendrick having the red/white/blue dancers stand in a trans flag formation?

So many people are like "i doubt this was on purpose" girl. it's Kendrick Lamar. He is known for being extremely involved in his dancers' choreography, having multilayered symbolism in his performances- which this entire show was full of- being an activist, winning a fucking Pulitzer, being tightly in control of his own image and how he presents himself to the media, and has trans family members that he has not only openly spoken about but has an entire song about.

You think every single thing about his superbowl performance was intentional except this one thing? You think the dancers just happened to sort themselves out in the unique 5 bar gradient formation that literally only the trans flag has that no other flag has? Why? Why the fuck would that be? You think they all just did this by divine coincidence?

Why is it so unbelievable to y'all that a known activist, with known support for the trans community, would show the trans flag on purpose? Why is it so unbelievable to y'all that a Black man would care about trans people? I didn't see this "oh they don't care, oh all celebrities are fake" shit getting thrown at Lady Gaga or Chappell Roan two weeks ago at the grammys. Yeah they're both queer, but they arent trans. We can blame Google, yes.

It's not a bad format in technical terms (smaller file size, both lossy and lossless, transparency, can be animated) as an option but file size doesn't make a difference we're talking maybe a few megabytes when the same websites using webp also flood you with images and/or videos.

But it's patented and Google was protective of it so it didn't see much adoption so kind of fell by the wayside. JPG and PNG are so ingrained, to get users to adopt an alternative en masse, you have to give up control of the format which Google didn't.

Windows OS also didn't support viewing webp for years and required (requires?) downloading an optional update to do that so the result was an image file that wasn't viewable on the most popular OS or be editable in the most popular image editing software for years.

Paintshop pro was probably the fastest "big" one and it added support a year after the format was released. Krita in 2015, GIMP in 2018, Photoshop 2022, Blender 2022, Clip Studio Paint 2024. Webp was released in 2010.

It's not the juggernaut it once was but an image format going 12 years before getting Photoshop support is a death knell when this isn't some small research group, it's Google and they definitely could have worked with Adobe to get support out there sooner if they cared to.

Something I feel like I don't see discussed very often in this fandom is how moon being a woman is integral to her character. The way she conducts herself, the way she speaks... it all screams "female social conditioning" and especially "eldest daughter syndrome" to me. Don't be rude, always be nurturing and kind, be patient, be supportive, be selfless, don't express aggression or negative opinions...

...None of us really miss the times when their cities were populated. Imagine having skin parasites that also ask for advice and have opinions...

I've seen some people take her "skin parasites" comment as uncharacteristic and unfounded hatred instead of something extremely telling about how her "parents" have treated and conditioned her. The use of "parents" is very purposeful here, I feel. Her immediate retraction and apology evoke the image of a daughter who had a poor relationship / was mistreated by her parents and is left with conflicting and complicated emotions she can't process. She resents them, but she also feels indebted to them, and perhaps her acknowledgement of them as "parents" may imply affection, as well. Regardless, since she cannot process these emotions (and feels it is wrong of her to hold them to begin with), she represses them. She retracts her comment and apologizes for being disrespectful.

That's probably all she's ever known how to do. All she's ever been allowed to do. Moon seems very conscientious about behaving "politely." Don't get me wrong, Moon clearly values kindness and hope; those are core to her character. She doesn't like being angry, and it doesn't usually benefit her or help anyone.

She displays emotional maturity here by acknowledging and communicating her anger whilst not letting it cloud her judgment. Instead of holding things against the slugcat, she continues talking to them, because she understands that staying mad at them won't help anybody.

I don't think being angrier would help her, and her willingness to forgive and let go of it is a strength. But I believe her emotional repression takes that maturity and strength of character and creates something a little more complicated — a woman who struggles to fully process her negative emotions, especially surrounding people and concepts she is meant to respect. Her core values ride the line between virtue and vice (being willing to forgive and caring for others vs being too passive and repressing her own needs), and her actions are layered and nuanced, just like a real person.

This isn't to say she is against expressions of anger or negative emotions wholesale.

She empathizes with the frustration that FP feels in a very literal sense; she's processing his emotions from the neuron. She doesn't judge or rebuke him for this; rather, she explains why he might be frustrated, and that he is likely not alone in feeling this way.

So, it's fine when others express that anger. Just not for Moon. Ironically, the fandom sometimes reinforces this. Moon can get mad at you and refuse to speak to you if you treat her in ways she doesn't want to be treated. (setting and enforcing boundaries) I've seen (some) people say she's being mean or unreasonable here. You're not trying to hurt her, and your actions are quite tame. But these actions cause Moon great distress and make her feel disregarded. Holding her neurons likely inhibits their function, jumping around likely overstimulates her, and interrupting her while she's speaking to you is just plain rude.

But some people still seem shocked by this; they're not used to NPCs setting boundaries with them like they're actual people. And Moon is usually very nice to you! So when she enforces these boundaries, some people get frustrated and confused.

...This ties into the parentification of LTTM, a phenomenon that greatly upsets me.

People expect her to be unconditionally and endlessly loving and patient and supportive, and then when she acts like a normal human being, they get mad. Because they expect her to be their mom.

And yes, she is very caring, supportive, and patient! She's also eloquent and enthusiastic, emotionally repressed, hopeful and kind, someone who struggles to assert herself, someone who enjoys sharing knowledge with others, someone who's careful about the way she conducts herself, someone who speaks fondly of sky-sails in flight during big festivals, etc...

She's very caring towards others. Like a Big Sister. She is Big Sister-coded. Her name is Broadcasts is Big Sis / Big Sister Moon. It could not be more obvious, and yet some people force her into the role of "mother" because on an unconscious level, they can only conceive of women as mothers and wives.

Perhaps that is too biting, but I believe it is true. It does not help that her Counterpart (Five Pebbles) is often infantilized in tandem, but that is a conversation for another time. I should also specify that forcing / expecting eldest daughters to take on a motherly role is a phenomenon widespread across various cultures and not something exclusive to the Rain World Fandom. ((it's a widespread societal issue!))

Regardless, this view of Moon as a mother plays into this idea that she must be unfailingly kind, unconditionally patient, and unfathomably supportive. Moon likely even expects these things of herself. The expectations of a Big Sister are not so different, after all.

And she is trying very, very hard. She is exhausted and irritable, she hardly functions, and she has very few resources to help her. Don't get me wrong, I do think she is an exceptionally kind person, but that is because she wants to be. Her kindness is not the default; it is not owed to you or to be expected of everyone you meet. Looks To The Moon remains kind and hopeful because she is fighting every moment of her life for it to be so.

Unfortunately, her efforts often go unacknowledged and her radical empathy (influenced by her unique circumstances) taken for granted.

People often focus on how it feels to be someone's "Little Brother", to live in their shadow...

But what about how Moon feels? What about the struggles of being responsible for another person? Of being an example for them and held to higher standards? Of unfailingly devoting your support to them? How she struggled to assert herself, to go against her sibling... How she may feel guilt over both her inaction and her subsequent action... Maybe she should've acted sooner. Maybe she shouldn't have acted at all. Maybe, if she had just been a better Big Sister, none of this would've happened to begin with.

We don't really know how she feels about all that, though. (She probably doesn't, either, haha) It's all just speculation at the end of the day. And I don't want to make it seem like her "Big Sister" role is an entirely negative or oppressive thing. Again, she is kind! She likes teaching others! She's very understanding and caring, and she has a lot of patience and maturity! I just think it's fun to point out these subtler details.

I think viewing Moon as someone who has been socialized as a woman and as a big sister specifically gives a lot of meaningful insight into her character. And it's not something I see discussed a ton in general.

Other Notes I didn't know where to put:

Eldest Daughter Syndrome I cannot re-iterate this enough

I feel like sometimes people make moon assertive or more aggressive to compensate for her suffering. Like, because she's FP Local Group Senior, she has to be authoritative. I think these people focus too much on the "Big" and not enough on the "Sister" aspect. Moon isn't a girlboss, and that's okay! It's okay for her to struggle with things. (But, being fair, you're not hurting anyone by doing this, so do what makes you happy etc etc. I just think it can potentially come from a place of devaluing "weakness" often associated with traditionally feminine traits, and it's good to examine that.)

Furthering the aggression point, I think some people see that Five Pebbles hurt her and think that there needs to be some sort of retribution. That Moon should hate him, resent him, and want to hurt him back. But I feel like forgiveness makes much more sense for Rain World. Moon isn't being unrealistically kind or too much of a pushover by forgiving Pebbles and not holding resentment towards him; she's at peace. She doesn't want to hurt him or hate him, and doing so wouldn't bring her any catharsis. (And he doesn't want to hurt her, either! i could make an entirely different ramble about why I think the Vanilla siblings could and should reconcile but I'll save that for another time ig) uhhhh this isn't entirely gendered something something Care Ethics

LTTM and FP serve as foils in a lot of ways. I think there is an enlightening conversation to be had about how FP explores / presents traditionally masculine traits or a masculine socialization.

The bennies / ancients / whatever seem to place a lot of importance on Obligations. I think Roles were probably important to them. Being a Big Sister likely had a lot of Obligations that came with it.

I get that LTTM and FP are not like explicitly specifically siblings in Vanilla. I do think it is implied, though. They have a unique physical connection and live in very close proximity to one another. There's no flashing "THESE TWO ARE SIBLINGS!!" sign, but the subtext is there, and I prefer to interpret them as such. alternative readings could instead be "all local group iterators are related" or "none of these people are related". do what you want ig

Was any of this even intentional? I'm probably reading a liiiittle too much into things, but I do think this was intentional. She's "Big Sister Moon" in the broadcasts. She could've just had her normal name, but they decided to make her "Big Sister Moon." Vanilla is subtle and largely up to interpretation, but it is very purposeful, I feel. I don't think they named her BSM just for fun, lol. (But maybe I'm wrong!)

I do not want to undermine FP's struggles and equally fascinating character-writing here. There's a whole host of issues I have with how people see FP, but I feel like many people have spoken about this at-length, and most are aware of the common complaints that tend to arise. With LTTM, I feel like people generally really like her, but they don't appreciate / talk about the finer nuances of her character as much. People like her because she's really nice, but there's more to her than that. ((also because it's fun to talk about that's kinda the main reason I made this))

I do actually have some thoughts about DP canon and the relationship between LTTM and FP and her role as Big Sister within that canon ((like how people misinterpret FP's construction as being for LTTM rather than primarily to serve her Citizens with LTTM being alleviated as a bonus)) but to be honest there's so much to read with DP that I don't really want to try and tackle it. Furthermore, DP canon will on multiple occasions either contradict itself or muddy the concepts it's trying to communicate and this makes it a lot harder to work with when it comes to interpretations and readings aha.

Something was changing in Mark.  The sweet, funny, and thoughtful guy you’d known for years was still there, but you’d noticed within the last few months that there was also something else—something much darker bubbling just below the surface.  At first you told yourself his heavy emotions were normal and made sense.  What he went through with his father was nothing short of traumatic, and he never truly had a chance to process any of it.  Not in the typical sense, at least.  No therapy, no counselors, no support groups.  Just himself, his mom, and all of the poor souls who dared to take up the mantle of being a career criminal.  Of course there was always you, but what words of wisdom could you really offer?  You were just a regular girl, working an ordinary nine to five as a library assistant.  The life he led was so fantastical and impossible for you to ever truly understand.  You loved him dearly and would always support him in any way you could, but the reality was you did not relate to his current life at all.

As time went on though you noticed that what started as a shadow within him was growing, becoming like a black sludge that would seep out of his mouth when talking about Cecil, or his father—or anything really that he disagreed with.  If you were being honest with yourself, it scared you.  You of course knew he was not his father and would never even conceive of committing such atrocities, but somewhere in the recesses of your mind you held the image of the destruction that was caused by Omni-Man, and then the knowledge that Invincible was more than capable of doing the same.  Not wanting to add the stressors that consumed Mark’s life, however, you never voiced these feelings.  But they were there nonetheless, and becoming harder for you to ignore.

“I don’t understand what you’re so upset with me about [Name],” Mark stated, the irritation evident in his tone. “You wanted to become the lead librarian, and now you are. That’s literally what you asked for.”  You stared up at him incredulously, arms stiff at your sides with your hands clenched into tight fists.

“You have got to be kidding me right now Mark.” You waited a few moments, for some reason believing his senses would come back to him.  Instead, you were met with him starring evenly back down at you. Your eyes widened as you shouted, “You threatened Mrs. Crump into retiring!”

“I gave her strong encouragement.”

“Be so for real right now…” You dropped your head and covered your face with your palm, needing to regroup your thoughts. “Maybe I’m mistaken.  Did Invincible not show up at my job this morning and tell my boss that if she was smart, she would make this her last day?” His dark, slim eyes glanced away from you now as he gave no answer.  Your lips pursed as you slowly nodded your head, at a loss for words.  Mark looked back at you, his expression suddenly so soft and tender.  It almost made your heart flutter.

“Your life is so short, [Name],” he said in almost a whisper. “You deserve for every dream you ever have to become reality.  In fact you deserve even more!” All the built up tension in your muscles suddenly melted away as you instinctively reached out to take his hand in a comforting gesture.

“Oh—” Your fingers trace up the solid and muscled contours of his arm, gently grazing over his shoulder and neck to finally cup his jaw. Your eyes meet with his and you couldn’t help but feel a soft smile tug at your lips. “Mark… My life may seem short in comparison to yours, but understand that for me, it’s the longest thing I’ll ever experience.” Your words seemed to do nothing to comfort him as a look of frustration pulled at his features. You only continued to gently smile. “Besides, the fight for our dreams is the most important part of the adventure.”

This seemed to register for him, at least on some level. “I love you,” he hushed while holding your face in his calloused hands.  He leaned down to give you a soft, lingering kiss that made you weak in the knees.  This time, as was the case with every time that you began to worry about his dark tendencies, he touched you and flooded your brain with oxytocin causing you to forget all about your concerns.  Just like he wanted.

This is a dream, you told yourself.  Every cell in your body was shaking in horror.  This is dream, you repeated in your mind, tears welling in your eyes.  This has to be a dream.  Mark stood facing you, donning his superhero attire.  Although the blood that heavily stained his right hand up to his elbow did not lend itself to the idea of heroism. “[Name],” he spoke your name so calmly.  Nausea churned in your stomach as you took a step back from him. “I had to do this.  His life was meaningless – he didn’t deserve to be on this planet with you.”

You couldn’t bring yourself to look anywhere but at his face.  You didn’t dare see what was undoubtedly laid in a careless, bloodied pile at his feet. “You know that I’m right, [Name]. Don’t you understand? He was—”

“He was my father!” you cried, the tears now spilling freely from your swollen eyes. “How could you do this?!”

“How could I do what? Save you from his abuse? Spare you from another bruised eye or busted lip? Another horrible insult being spit at you from his vile mouth?” As he talked you could see the blackness gushing from his lips.  This was what you had feared all along but denied endlessly, until now.  And now it was far too late.  You took another step away from him and suddenly felt your back pressed into something solid and immovable.  Mark’s arms closed around you from behind, his face leaned down next to yours. “I am all you really need, [Name].  I can keep you safe.  No one else can do that for you.  Only me.” You sobbed without restraint, all of your body giving way under his embrace as he kept you on your feet effortlessly. “I know this is hard for you right now, but don’t worry, I promise you’ll understand someday.”

Having gone numb to your own senses, it took you several minutes to realize you were no longer on solid ground and instead floating above your father’s home.  It was quiet out, no sirens or people screaming.  Your neighborhood and the police were none the wiser.  And even if someone did know, what could they possibly do? “I love you, [Name].  I know you know that.  You might not feel the same right now, but I hope soon enough you will again.”  The tone in his voice left you feeling like you didn’t have a choice in the matter.  And suddenly, you could see the future clearly.  He would follow in his father’s footsteps, and this world would bend knee to his every whim.  You would be no exception.  In the name of self-preservation, you found yourself reaching up to hold onto his arms which still gripped tightly around your rib cage. 

“I love you too.”  The words surprised even you as they cracked out of your throat.  A low hum of satisfaction could be heard from Mark before he placed a tender kiss to the crook of your neck.

“I’m so glad to hear you say that.” He squeezed you even tighter, pushing the breath out of your lungs and putting a deep ache in your spine.  How could your sweet, thoughtful, caring boyfriend have changed so much? Where did the Mark you know go? Your stare fell back down to the roof of your father’s home and the sight immediately brought tears back to your eyes, blurring your vision. “Things in this world are going to be changing.” You bottom lip quivered at his words. “But don’t worry, I’ve done some things to your house just to make sure you can stay safe.  I can’t wait for you to see.” He placed another kiss to your throat, and you felt yourself slip out of your skin.  Nothing would ever be the same.

hi, all. i've already made a lengthy post explaining the reasons we should not support this upcoming seventeen album, which you can read here. it is far too long to delve into in any substance here considering this post will already have some serious length to it, however, it discusses the already ongoing boycott and the reasons behind it, as well as the reasons to boycott this album, which include their overwork and mistreatment, and more significantly, their continued collaboation with zionists in the past and on this album, as well as the involvement with a producer promoted his company's work with self professed n/azi kanye west in a highly antisemitic song. i strongly suggest you give it a read.

however, i would like to drive the point home with this post, and that is because both the members and their company continue to be willfully uneducated and ignorant of these matters, and further... unsavory things about their upcoming activities are coming out. they recently announced a 10th anniversary celebration in collaboration with airbnb. airbnb is a pressure target on the official bds boycott list. a pressure boycott per the bds website includes boycotting when there are reasonable alternatives to the company or product. (i don't know about you, but i've never been in a position where i am absolutely forced to use airbnb.)

airbnb is complicit in israeli occupation. settlers list hundreds of homes, apartments and villas for tourists to stay in, allowing both airbnb and illegal settlers to profit off land stolen from palestinian people. they quite literally allow war crimes to be used as tourism. this now makes 2 zionist or zionist adjacent collaborations linked to seventeen's anniversary celebrations, as well as one n/azi adjacent collaboration. i am encouraging you all to boycott more than ever.

there are carats in gaza fighting to survive every day and it is a slap in the face to them that you would sit down and put any money towards this album, even by offering seventeen and hybe so much as a cent of passive income through streams.

those of us wanting to boycott are unfortunately very much a minority but please don't allow that to discourage you. this is how you can use your voice. this is how you can make a difference. if you feel discouraged by the imbalance here, i encourage you to educate others and urge them to join the efforts.

being a fan of something does not mean you cannot have criticisms or grievances, and it especially does not mean you cannot use your voice. you do not have to swallow your feelings about anything these artists do. you do not owe them anything and they are not entitled to your unwavering support. in fact, when it pertains to matters as disturbing as these, your support of them makes you entitled to speak up when they act in a disappointing fashion.

this is not hatred of seventeen. this is desire for them to better themselves and hope that they will remember their humanity before they act. i encourage you to remember yours, too. you are a human before you are a fan of something. think of your fellow humans, especially those suffering in gaza. act in their best interest, not seventeen's.
